How to Build a Fast, Responsive Business Card Website? - Case Study of the B-Vent Website

One-page sites and business-card websites are becoming a popular choice for more and more companies. See how we built one — and why speed and responsiveness matter so much for this kind of site.

type of project: Website | technology: WordPress

Business cards still serve an important business function today — they're convenient, easy to access, and memorable, letting you deliver key information quickly and simply. Those same strengths can be put to work when building a website: when you want to put your best foot forward with a client and encourage them to reach out, it pays to make the site fast and clear. Find out how our work with B-Vent resulted in a modern, optimized, responsive version of their business-card site — one that can happily stand in for its physical counterpart.

About the company

Our client roster grew to include B-Vent, a company that has spent well over a decade delivering air conditioning, ventilation, heat recovery, and air purification solutions. The company operates across the whole country, serving both private customers and businesses, and provides complete climate-control solutions for homes and commercial buildings alike. B-Vent specializes in design, consulting, sales, and installation of ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and also runs a physical store where customers can get expert advice and an offer tailored to their needs.

B-Vent already had its own website, but it wasn't up to current standards. Responsiveness issues and a lack of mobile optimization made the content hard to browse. On top of that, while testing we found the site wasn't optimized for some modern browsers, which led to display errors and broken layouts. In short, our client needed a website that was new, modern, and able to keep pace with the internet's ever-changing demands.

Client goals

B-Vent needed a new version of its website. Beyond the requirements dictated by the changing web — a responsive site, compatible with and adapted for mobile devices — the client envisioned the site as a kind of digital business card. Its job would be to open a line of communication between the company and its customers, present the most important information, and encourage people to get in touch or visit the physical store.

After analyzing the brief, we concluded that WordPress was the perfect technology to meet all of the client's needs. Since a business-card site doesn't need e-commerce features, building it on WordPress is faster, lighter on resources, and more cost-effective — while still delivering a great-looking result.

Another benefit of this approach is avoiding the overhead that extra JavaScript-based modules bring. That let us build a lightweight, very fast site for B-Vent that scores well on PageSpeed — after all, a business-card site that loads slowly and feels sluggish can put off a potential customer before they even get to know the company and its offer.

Delivery - step by step

Designing the site

When designing the site, we drew on the company's long history and professionalism, its logo, and the previous website it had. The client gave us a lot of freedom and creative latitude on layout, structure, and content. We designed a block-based aesthetic with a strong emphasis on visuals tied to the company's offer. For the imagery, we leaned into the professionalism, breadth of services, and comprehensive approach to customers that B-Vent has delivered for years, reflected through people shown in workplace and home settings, paired with air-conditioning and ventilation equipment in the foreground.

The one-page site was rounded out with a color scheme drawn from the company's recognizable, multicolored, fan-like logo.

By weaving the logo's colors — a combination of red, green, blue, and yellow — into the site's elements, we carried the essence of B-Vent's visual identity through to the page. This ties the company's DNA to the business-card feel of the site, and adds style and contrast to an otherwise minimalist, block-based layout.

When we presented the concept to our client, we knew right away it was a perfect fit!

Building the site

With the design warmly received by the client, we moved on to building the site. Keeping speed and responsiveness in mind, we used Gutenberg as our page builder. Gutenberg is WordPress's own editor, built around treating every element of a page as a separate block. Compared to another popular option — Elementor — which offers similar functionality, Gutenberg is natively integrated with WordPress and highly optimized for performance. Being lighter than Elementor as well, using Gutenberg for business-card sites can speed up loading and browsing.

Per the design, we also added a contact form to the B-Vent site, so interested customers could easily reach out, learn more about the company and its offer, and start a working relationship. Getting the form running required implementing SMTP email support, wiring it up to the site, and testing it for stability and reliability.

As a result of our work and optimization, we built a simple but responsive, very fast-to-use business-card site. The client was happy with the outcome — the site does its job well, both for the client and for visitors, and it does so efficiently and comfortably. A business-card site like this leaves a great impression!
